Grand Final Thriller - Women bring home the Premiership!
Saturday 19th September was the Women’s Grand Final, and what a nail-biter it was, with the game eventually going all the way to 1-on-1s!
A great piece of play down the right-hand side saw Aimee Keest find the hotspot, with Debbie Storey putting it away to give Margaret River a 1–0 lead at half-time.
Robins equalised just before the end of the third quarter, taking the score to 1–1. Then, in the final minute of the last quarter, Margaret River won a penalty corner and scored! Celebrations were short-lived, however, when the goal was reversed by the umpire for a foot, sending the Grand Final to 1-on-1s!
Abby Ralston earned a stroke from her 1-on-1 and calmly converted it, before Josie Rodriguez skilfully rolled out and found the back of the net. With some fantastic saves from goalie, Emma Pointon and plenty of tension around the ground, the score reached 3–3 and the race was on for the golden goal!
With the result hanging in the balance, it was Josie Rodriguez who stepped up again and scored, securing the Grand Final win for the “Mighty Mighty River”
It was a fantastic team effort and a result that reflected the work of the whole squad throughout the season. Coach Wally Zalewski was “incredibly proud to see how the group had learned, developed and aligned, and it was great to see that effort rewarded on Grand Final day”.
A big thank you and congratulations also goes to every player who was part of the squad this season, not just those who took to the pitch today. Everyone played their part in getting the team to that final and ultimately bringing the Premiership home.
Credit must also go to Robins, who have been a great team to play against all year and certainly made us work for it.
What a Grand Final, and what a way to finish the season!
