Margaret River Hockey Club now has 152 registered players!

As I sit and watch the rain fall, I thought it was time to review our hockey season so far.  Our teams have had some great games, our players have gained carnival experience and we have a Country Week win to add to our achievements. It’s exciting to see our club grow and I am enjoying watching old and new players, supporting each other, becoming friends and playing as a team.

Did you know that our youngest player is 7 and our wisest player is 69?

This year we entered 3 teams in the Year 3-5 competition with thanks to a new sponsor, Pharmacy 777. Our Year 6-8 Boys team also have a new sponsored shirts, thanks to Yahava Koffeeworks and the Masters team will soon be wearing new sponsored shirts, with thanks to Grant Evans and Farmers Own.

Did you know, we have more than 40 volunteers that coach, manage, umpire and mentor each week?

A full set of training manuals, written by Claire Sieber and Kate Fleay, are available to all Coaches and Managers. Thanks to them for their hard work in developing  these. If you are thinking about coaching or managing a team next year, we have the support network to help you so give it a go!

Thanks to ALL of our volunteers for sharing their good vibes and support.  It’s really appreciated by players and parents.  I did think about counting how many oranges and confectionery snakes we consume as a club each week, but the mind started to boggle!

The Club is about more than just hockey

I love to see the chats taking place along the fence line at training. It is something we previously didn’t really get chance to do when we had to car-pool for our training nights in Busselton. Come on down for a chat as it’s a great opportunity to see how everyone is going, share ideas and help organise the weekend car-pool.

Thanks to our sponsors

I am looking forward to training on our new training turf.  It was only two and a half  years ago that we received our first pledge of funds from Margaret River Lions.  Since then, we have raised enough to attract Shire, State and Federal funding to complete the project.  The design of the new facility triggered a much needed redesign of roadways, drainage and pathways around Gloucester Park and construction is now underway.   Thanks to everyone who has been involved in this process.  It has been a long journey in a short space of time!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our local turf sponsors:

Margaret River Rotary Club

Lions Club of Margaret River

Lions Club of Cowaramup

Lions Club of Leeuwin

Fusion Electrical (Luke and Kath Altman)

SportsPower Margaret River

Mitre 10

Middleton Advisory

Finally, I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all.  Thank you for choosing to be part of our  Margaret River Hockey Club!  I think most teams have faced some challenges, with some crazy weather and frustrating late game changes, but, we have faced them together!  It’s a fact that if we work together and we look out for each other, on and off the field, we will be able to build a better club – together.

As our club motto says “Proud Past – Bright Future”

So best of luck for the second half of the season folks – enjoy your hockey!

See you out on the turf!
