Scarred for Life

Scarred for Life – Sat Oct 13th, Western Pavillion

On Saturday October 13, the Margaret River Hockey Club hosted it’s second “Scarred For Life” memorial match in honour of past players Ken Howes and Stuart “Scar” Campbell, whom both took their own lives on 2016.

The successful day included past players returning from Bunbury and as far as Perth, along with local stalwarts coming to witness the fun, family friendly match between Settlers and Breakers.

Legend, Wally Zalewski volunteered to “umpire” the 2 x 20 minutes halves. The silver Fox, Jarrad Zanich opened strongly for Settlers and somehow created some lucky forward moves. He shone later in defence, making 2 unbelievable saves on the goal line, and then scored from an over head, flicked over the shoulder of the surprised Colin Fox. Breakers Dan Bell was like a brick wall in defence and Brynley Jenkins appeared at home on grass as he is on turf for Settlers, setting up a few goals for the defending runners up. Both Chloe and Asha Altmann had exemplary games, as did Jarrad Howes, who managed to stay on his feet a whole lot more than last year.

Jon Tennant had a fine game in the back line for Settlers and used his reach to advantage. Luke Altmann was solid as was the running Steven Noakes. Errol Beere also had a cracker for Breakers as did Kate Mann. Ross MacKillop had travelled down from Perth but showed no signs of fatigue, turning back the clock with some classic forward runs. Maxine Williams pulled on the green and gold at late notice and trapped a nice over head late in the game.

After some dubious umpiring decisions, Breakers still managed to sneak through with a 1 goal advantage, to take the trophy home once again.

The club committee launched the match in 2017 and used funds raised to host a mental health awareness session for local sporting clubs. This years’ money raised ($800) will be used to sponsor a student to attend Camp Hero, an initiative by Perth mental health charity Zero2Hero.

Special thanks to Home Hardware, Yahava Koffeeworks, Temper Temper Chocolate, Colonial Brewing Co., Phyllis and Bob Fox, Brumby’s, Baz the Butcher for donating prizes and goods for the day.

Club Windup and Senior Presentations

Sunday 30th September

Thank you to those who attended, even though the weather was not that inviting, it was great to see the younger players running about and enjoying the bouncy castle.  Lots of discussions took place over a delicious glass of wine.  Thank you very much Jackie and Matt Jarvis from Jarvis Estate for hosting the event.

Photos thanks to Richard Smith again at this link…. Richard Smith shared a link.

Lions Fundraiser Weekend

The last Fundraiser of the season and what a success it was!

Firstly thank you to Hoda Bell, Lisa Tennant, Max and Craig Williams and Val Bredenkamp for their work setting up on Friday prior to the shed sale.  Thank you to Lions Margaret River for the fantastic and very tasty morning tea.  There were some interesting discussions around the table the other Lions volunteers.

The Lions support some much needed projects, they really do an amazing job! The Lions in Margaret River are also always looking for volunteers.  So if you want a change from volunteering for the hockey club, and you want to help a local charity we recommend that you team up with the Lions!

On Saturday our sausage sizzle was again run by our dream team, Bob and Phyllis Fox who were assisted Renee de Voogd and Fleur Piper.  Inside the shed and assisting with sales were Barbara and Bobbie Rothwell-Hines, Maxine and Helena Williams and in the furniture section was Craig and Rowley Williams.

Thank you to the Lions for this opportunity, a weekend of supporting each other means that the hockey club received a donation for $1,000 from the Lions for voluntary work and we topped up that following another successful sausage sizzle and cake sale.

Thanks also to the local businesses, Brumby’s and Margaret River Gourmet Meats for their support with our sausage sizzle.

Pizza for Dinner – Wednesday 12th September

Fundraising at Domino’s, Margaret River

12th September – Fundraising at Domino’s, Margaret River

Raj and the team at Domino’s chose to support our Hockey Club for one of their “Raise some Dough for local community groups” events.  This meant that if you had pizza for dinner on 12th September, or you got your friends and family to have pizza, the club benefited in the form of money donated per pizza.

So thank you to those that joined the “Pavement Party” on the 12th and those that took their pizza home!

If you missed that fundraiser, but still fancy a pizza, have a look at their menu below!

Junior Players whip up a storm at the Bunbury Lightning Carnival

A team from the Margaret River Senior High School attended the Lightning Carnival in Bunbury today.  Members of the  Year 7 and 8’s team included MRHC players; Bobbie Rothwell-Hines, Helena Williams, Jay Burgess, Tom Gorta, and Isaac Chapman-Sharp.   The school team also had club support with coaching in the form or Maxine Williams, Kiri Mann and Finn Boylan.  Henry Gorta was the Umpire for the day.

Some of the Year 7 players had been introduced to hockey through the Margaret River Primary School format and spoke of their introduction to Hockey with Mark Harrison fondly.  The games were very enthusiastically played, and numbers to play hockey at this carnival are steadily increasing with players from these carnivals then keen and to learn more about playing hockey through our club.

Congratulations to all involved.

Thank you, On The Go for sponsoring eleven club hoodies.  The lucky winners from our fundraising raffle received their new warm hoodies today during a very cold training session.  Winners were across the board, from coaches, players and parents, all keen to wear their toasty warm new hoodies.

These hoodies feature the club emblems and logos, as well as the Above the Line logo.

Special thanks to Kris Milne and the team at On The Go Sports for sponsoring the club with these new hoodies.
